Internet of things(IoT) is growing like anything, It is one of the greatest phenomena of this century including Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing. It has a huge potential to affect our day to day life like how we live, how we work, our industries, the appliances etc.
So what is Internet of Things (IoT) ?
In this post I will describe what is Internet of Things. Lets break these words to understand clearly.
Do you know what is Internet, well it is not google, Facebook but actually it is the interconnection of various computers. With the help of this interconnections we are able to share our data from one computer to another.
Similarly Google, Facebook etc are able to share their files hosted on their computers. So when we are in the same network we are able to browser Facebook, Google etc.
And the term Things means the day to day objects which are not connected to Internet like bulb, fan , A.C, etc. Hence concluding Internet of Things is interconnection of the things which are not the part of Internet(A.C, fan, bulb etc.) connected together so that they can share data over the internet and can be easily controlled through the network.
It is also known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) or Skynet.
What are the components of Internet of Things (IoT)
These smart IoT system consist of different components to get their existence. These are
- A network
- Sensors
- Data Cloud
- User Interface
- Data Security
- Data Analytics
These all component work together to give rise to a successful IoT infrastructure.
Enough of Introduction lets take some example to make these things clear.
An Example…
Lets suppose you are living in a very hot country / place. And living without A.C is not easy, Now your office have centralized A.C so you don't have any problem, when you drive back to home from your Office you drive in your car which again have A.C and your home also have A.C but when you enter your Car it is burning like anything you feel like you are inside oven, Similarly this may be the case for your home. So wouldn’t be it very good if you car and home A.C starts automatically upon giving your command so that whenever you leave for home you feel normal and you don't have to sit inside a oven.
Timer inside the A.C can be solution but what if you don't have fixed time to leave your office. Here comes the role of IoT now you just have to attach A.C of your car and home with internet through different circuits(microcontroller) like Arduino, NodeMCU so that you can control the A.C inside your car and home from anywhere on this planet earth wherever internet network is there. So to solve problems like this IoT cam into the picture although this is a very small application on IoT I have take just to explain you, you will be amazed to discover where IoT are used these days. Why Internet of Things (IoT)?
We humans are becoming busy day by day, and also we want accuracy and efficiency in every work and we know that how efficient and accurate machines are so day by day our dependency on machine and IoT will be increasing. The internet of things helps to make people life better and smarter. IoT is not only helping individual life but it have also impact on industries and market. As we have seen above a lot of applications of IoT from personal to industrial to market point of view.
IoT have improved industries very much it have helped to automate things and process thereby reducing labor cost hence making profit on products.
With IoT the devices can represent themselves digitally, hence they can be controlled from any part of the world. This interconnection also helps us capture more data and do analysis with the help of various cloud solutions and improve the process.
As IoT have huge potential it will continue to evolve and impact human life more and more.
Cons of Internet of Things (IoT)
We have discussed many advantages of IoT in human life but there are disadvantages also.
Some disadvantages of IoT include the following:
- In future more and more devices will be connected to IoT hence more and more information hence there are chances of Hacking of these information if secure protocol is not used.
- Managing them all together will also be a headache as In future more and more devices will be connected.
- Due to large system the probability of finding a bug will be difficult.
- There is lot of standards problem as IoT is not Standardized and no single governing body is there.
